A Quick Buck

I’ve been thinking about this topic for a couple of days now, so thought I’d just write a little about it.

It’s mainly come from this new ‘WiiWare’ that’s starting to arise, and how it’s giving the little people a chance. The problem with games now is they cost a lot of money to make, meaning only the really big boy’s can afford to make the high end games. But because of this no one is really willing to take any risks and so companies are just sticking with the same formulas they know, and churning out the same games year in year out, often looking for the quick buck. A perfect example is football games, why do people insist on buying the new Fifa game because the last digit has changed by one, the only thing your buying is a few extra polys and a new kit, and to charge full price for that is extortionate. So because of this no new gaming ideas are being thought up and the gaming industry is inevitable falling down a spiralling hole, some people saying its heading to a ‘Hollywood’ status.

Now when WiiWare was first announced I didn’t really give it a second thought, but after reading some of the games that are being developed for it it’s starting to sound really interesting. The main reason for this is it doesn’t cost thousands to make a game, and give’s the smaller company’s a chance to make some new fresh ideas for games, there not necessarily thinking about graphics, but more gameplay and design, and ultimately actually take a chance in the hope of creating something brilliant. If you think back to when games started they didn’t cost a stupid amount to make, and so you got loads of ideas for games, and yes some of them weren’t the best, but without that risk a lot of the games we see now would have never come about.

So hopefully the WiiWare will spark off a lot of companies to up there game on more than graphics and the quick buck, and actually design games that are fun, exciting, and worthwhile to play.
